The antigen used for coating the plates is a wild strain isolate (St. Gallen). Varizella is an acute viral disease caused by the Varizella zoster virus (VZV) that belongs to the herpes virus family.The disease begins with fever and malaise and a maculopapular rash that changes within hours to vesicles that remain during 3 to 4 days. Lesions pustulate, crust and heal slowly over a 3 week period. Lesions appear in the scalp, face, neck, trunk, mucous membranes of the mouth and upper respiratory tract. Sometimes, especially in *****s, the fever and general clinical status can be severe, but the disease is rarely fatal. The most common cause of death in *****s is the primary viral pneumonia, and in children, secondary bacterial infections or central nervous system involvement. Children with acute leukemia or immunocompromised persons are at higher risk of a general dissemination of the disease with fatal outcome. Newborns that are infected after 5 to 10 days, and the ones born from mothers that were infected 5 days before or two days after birth, can develop severe generalised Varizella with a mortality rate of 30%. Infection at the beginning of pregnancy rarely gives congenital malformations.Reactivation of VZV is usually manifested as zoster. Zoster normally begins with unilateral sharp and well localised pain.
