It is only produced in significant amounts during pregnancy as it is made by the placenta. During pregnancy the Estriol concentration raises sharply until delivery. Levels of estriol in non-pregnant women do not change much after menopause, and levels are not significantly different from levels in men. Estriol levels can be measured to give an indication of the general health of the fetus. DHEA is produced by the adrenal cortex of the fetus, this is converted to estriol by the placenta.If levels are abnormally low in a pregnant woman, this may indicate a problem with the development in the child. We are recommending to measure estriol in saliva during pregnancy only. In all other situations it makes more sense to measure estradiol or after menopause estrone. In order to avoid arbitrary results we highly are recommending to always take 5 samples during a 2 hour period and measure the average value of the mixture. We are highly recommending to only use appropriate validated sampling devices like the ones from Demeditec Diagnostics (see Saliva Set in this catalogue).
