This could be rheumatoid factors or other serum components which might cause false results in case in ELISA test kits for the measurement of IgM antibodies. Generally laboratory results can never be the only base for a medical report. The patient history and further tests additionally have to be taken into account. Clinical Significance This IgM confirmatory test is a simple and quick method which can eliminate the interference of rheumatoid factors and other IgG antibodies in case of ELISA assays for the quantitative measurement of IgM specific antibodies. There are a lot of IgM specific antibody tests in ELISA format available. Most of these test systems can give false positive results, if interfering rheumatoid factors are present in the patient sample. These interfering rheumatoid factors might give false positive IgM results if they should bind to the antigen-bound IgG. Very high levels of IgG (like maternal IgG antibodies in neonates) also might cause such false positive reactions. But such interferences are very rare in routine laboratory testing. Principle of the Test The RF-Adsorbent reagent contains a solution of anti-IgG-Antibodies. The pre-treatment of patient with this reagent will significantly decrease (in most cases even completely eliminate) the interfering IgG antibodies.
