Bid is a cytoplasmic protein that upon activation via an apoptosis signal is cleaved by caspase-8. Upon cleavage, the active Bid translocates to the mitochondria and binds BAK thereby inducing cytochrome c release and increasing mitochondrial membrane permeability.
