It is expressed primarily by monocytes in response to LPS, IL-4, or GM-CSF. The IL-19 receptor complex is shared with IL-24 and IL-20 and is composed of the IL-20R1 and IL-20R2 subunits. IL-19 stimulates monocytes to produce IL-6 and TNF-α. It also triggers apoptosis and the production of reactive oxygen species. IL-19 has also been reported to upregulate Th2 cytokines in CD4+ T cells and to inhibit Th1 responses, such as IFN-γ expression. Elevated levels of IL-19 have been observed in asthmatic patients, further indicating a possible role for IL-19 in the differentiation of the Th2 lineage.
