Expression of Aiolos is restricted to the lymphoid lineage, with B cells exhibiting the highest levels of expression, followed by NK and T cells. Studies demonstrate that Aiolos forms homodimers or heterodimerizes with Ikaros proteins. Moreover, Aiolos exhibits tyrosine phosphorylation and nuclear localization in response to IL-2 stimulation in T cells. Aiolos plays a role in IL-2-mediated anti-apoptosis by controlling Bcl-2 expression. Finally, Aiolos is involved in B cell development, with upregulation of this transcription factor observed at the pre-BI to pre-BII transition in response to pre-B cell receptor signaling.
