ALCAM is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein, possessing five extracellular Ig domains, a transmembrane domain, and a short cytoplasmic tail. ALCAM is involved in homotypic adhesion, as well as heterotypic adhesion with its natural ligand, CD6. A soluble isoform of ALCAM has been shown to inhibit homophilic adhesive interactions. ALCAM is expressed on a variety of cell types, including activated T and B cells, monocyte-derived dendritic cells, and thymic epithelial cells. ALCAM expression has also been used as a marker for the isolation of pluripotent stem cells.
