Description: Galectin-1 belongs to the galectin group of β-galactoside binding proteins within the larger family of lectin carbohydrate-binding proteins. Galectin-1 is produced by various cell types and tissues, and can be found in the cytosol and extracellularly. It lacks a signal sequence peptide necessary for the ER/Golgi secretion pathway and the mechanism of its secretion is not yet fully understood. Galectin-1 is most often present as a homodimer, but can dissociate into a monomer if concentrations are very low.
Galectin-1 can induce or inhibit cell growth, depending on the type and activation status of the cell as well as the concentration of the protein. It also promotes cell adhesion, aggregation, and mobility and plays a role in the development and differentiation of various cell types. Galectin-1 can also be expressed by some tumors, and its presence often correlates with poor cancer prognosis, possibly due to its contribution to tumor vascularization, metastasis, and protection from the immune response. Galectin-1 can also induce apoptosis or suppress the effector functions of some activated T cells. This is particularly true for Th1 and Th17 lineage cells, while Th2 cells are more resistant to its effects.
