Description: Galectin-3 belongs to the galectin group of β-galactoside binding proteins within the larger family of lectin carbohydrate-binding proteins. It is expressed by macrophages, dendritic cells, eosinophils, epithelial cells, and mast cells. Galectin-3 is located predominantly in the cytoplasm, and lacks the signal sequence peptide necessary for the classical ER/Golgi secretion pathway. However, its presence and function on the cell surface and extracellular matrix indicate that secretion occurs via an alternate pathway, although the mechanism is not yet fully understood. The intracellular functions of Galectin-3 include the regulation of apoptosis and the cell cycle. When secreted, Galectin-3 can bind to cell surface proteins to promote cell adhesion and aggregation or to mediate the activation and migration of monocytes. Overexpression of Galectin-3 has been observed in many types of tumors, and can influence the progression and metastasis of cancer.
